How Shah Rukh Khan was the saviour of an Indian man in war-torn Syria | bollywood

The next time you take Bollywood lightly, spare a thought for India’s soft power. A journalist who travelled through the troubled spots in war-torn Syria, particularly the world heritage town of Palmyra, has written a fascinating account of his travel in that nation and how it was Shah Rukh Khan who saved him every single time.

“Whether I went to Palmyra or any other area in Syria, if you are in trouble Bollywood is the best bet for you. All your local contacts can fail you. Even permission given by the Syrian government may not impress the army on the road. He might not like your face and you may end up sitting or standing depending on the situation. What saves you is Bollywood,” writes Kartikeya Sharma in DNA.

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan is immensely popular in Syria.

He goes on to say how his car was stopped at every post, he was asked to identify himself time and again. Whenever he would say he is an Indian, most of the soldiers would tell him: “Give my regards to Shah Rukh Khan or we love Shah Rukh Khan.” Katrina Kaif, Karisma Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan would also crop up in their conversations.

Syrians seemed genuinely interested in the personal life of Amitabh Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan and his equation with wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Many a times, they would ask him about Amitabh’s son’s equation with his wife, Aishwarya Rai. “Many asked me about Amitabh Bachchan’s son. His name. His equation with Aishwarya Rai… For those moments I felt that I owed Bollywood.”

Shah Rukh is among the most popular and recognisable Indian stars abroad. He has fans from Morocco to Germany and is considered a true “global ambassador of the Indian cinema”. In some regions, he enjoys as much popularity, if not more, than leading Hollywood stars.

HC to hear petition against Shah Rukh Khan, Zero for hurting religious sentiments | bollywood

Bombay high court will hear the petition filed against Shah Rukh Khan and the makers of Zero on November 30 for allegedly hurting sentiments of the Sikh community. The petitioner, Amritpal Singh Khalsa, sought removal of scenes where SRK has been shown wearing a ‘Kirpan’ – a part of Sikh faith — stating that the “display of the Kirpan in such a way is blasphemous.”

“The movie Zero which is coming, the lead actor Shah Rukh Khan is seen wearing a Kirpan along the Gatra that we wear (the belt). So that is a clear-cut mockery of our religion, our article of faith that is hurting my religious sentiments. I think only Sikhs are given the exclusive privilege of wearing and carrying Kirpans under Article 25. So he is clearly violating the Article 25,” Khalsa had told ANI during a recent interaction.

“Kirpan in the Sikh religion is our fundamental right and the way Shah Rukh Khan has worn the Kirpan, he has made fun of it. A lot of Sikhs have sacrificed their lives for Kirpan during the British time so he can’t make fun of it. There is no ban on wearing Kirpan, he can wear Kirpan but he has to follow the Sikh Rehat Maryada code of conduct that is what my prayer is,” he added.

This is not the first time such an objection has come to the fore against the film. Earlier this month, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa had filed a complaint against the actor for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community.

In response to the allegations, the film’s team had issued a statement, saying, “The image shows a dagger popularly known as ‘Katar’ in the Indian subcontinent and is nowhere close to a ‘Kirpan’ that carries the distinguished blessing of being Khalsa.”

They also clarified that the makers have been careful not to hurt the feelings of any community, including the Sikh community. Zero stars Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles. It is helmed by Anand L. Rai, the film will release on December 21.

Deepika Padukone holds mother-in-law’s hands as she poses with Ranveer Singh’s family after wedding. See pics | bollywood

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are back in Mumbai after their wedding in Italy, which was as gorgeous as it was secret. Other than close family, friends and members of their teams, the wedding was a no-go area for media with its security detail being compared to that accorded to world leaders.

However, now some of the photos from the Lake Como nuptials have trickled down to social media and a special one is of the newlyweds posing with Ranveer’s family. Ranveer and Deepika, on the day of their Konkani ceremony, can be seen with Ranveer’s father Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, his mother Anju Bhavnani and his sister Ritika Bhavnani. What really caught our attention is how Deepika holds ma-in-law Anju’s hand on the photo.

Deepika wore a red-and-gold kanjeevaram saree at the ceremony while Ranveer chose a veshti, kurta and angavastram — both chose designer Sabyasachi for the occasion.

The couple got married in Italy’s Lake Como on November 14 and 15 and shared their first photos on Thursday. Ranveer and Deepika touched down in Mumbai on Sunday and are expected to shift to Deepika’s residence in the city’s Prabhadevi today.

At the airport on Sunday, Deepika wore a straight-cut beige suit with traditional red Banarasi dupatta, with sindoor on her forehead, henna on her hands and traditional red ‘chooda’ (bangles) on her wrists. Ranveer sported a matching kurta-pyjama with a pink Nehru jacket.
